Is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) the same as a Nutritionist?

A nutritionist does not require specific education, training, licensing, or over-site. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.

Mary-Lauren Shelton is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), a food and nutrition expert. The RDN is a national license obtained once the individual has completed the required Bachelors Degree and coursework, 1200 hours of ACEND-approved supervised practice in the fields of Medical Nutrition Therapy, Community Nutrition, and Food Service, and passing the National Boards Exam by the Commission of Dietetic Registration. To maintain the RDN credentials the professional must complete continuing education in order to stay up-to-date on current research and treatment modalities. Many states, including Texas, also require Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) to also obtain the credentials (LD), Licensed Dietitian to practice in that state. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are also bound by law and must follow required guidelines and ethics in practice.
